Stolpman

2007 marks the first year that La Croce is not an even 50-50 blend. By adding more Sangiovese, the delicate, lighter hued varietal shows more influence on the Syrah. The main result is slightly more red fruit on the nose and front palate, rather than the black tar and violet of a Syrah-dominated blend. As always, the mouth-feel is massive, as only the most concentrated blocks of each grape are used for the La Croce program. In recent years, these blocks have amounted to 200-250 cases per year, and La Croce has quickly earned a cult following.

Wine Enthusiast

This is the costliest of Stolpman’s new reds and easily the best. It impresses for the depth of flavor and classic, dense structure. A co-fermented blend of Sangiovese and Syrah, it shows imposingly complex layers of dark stone fruits and berries, dark chocolate, bacon, dusty Indian spices and sweet, smoky sandalwood, wrapped into powerfully rich but gently ground tannins. Very fine, approaching the profound. Now–2013 before it loses freshness.

Score: 96. —Steve Heimoff, April 01, 2010.

Wine Advocate

Their co-fermented blend of Syrah and Sangiovese, La Croce Proprietary Red, is typically a very seductive style of wine. The 2007 is still primary, but it reveals abundant fruit as well as a beautiful sweet jammy strawberry and berry fruit-scented nose with hints of new saddle leather, tobacco leaf, and spice in the background. It is the estate’s most endearing offering for early drinking.

Score: 88-91. —Robert Parker, June 2008.
