Aequorea 2019 Spanish Springs Vineyard Viognier
With Viognier we aim for a style so much different than what is typically produced in California, choosing to showcase what can be done with the variety on the extremes of the coast where it struggles to ripen. Things really came together in 2019, as we had a nice long growing season, ultimately picking the Vio on October 11th with perfect chemistry. This year we chose to ferment 40% in stainless steel and the other 60% in older French oak barrels, giving us a good balance of bright, fresh elements to go with the slightly more textured component of the oak aged portion. Effusively aromatic, it bursts forth with notes of lemon curd, pineapple, white peach, crushed rocks, green banana, and ginger. The palate is bright and mineral driven, showcasing notes of lemon, white flowers, granny smith apple, pomelo, with a subtle briny character. It finishes taut and crisp, framed by taught line of acidity.
Aequorea, which means "of the sea" in latin, is the sister label to Aaron Jackson's Aaron Wines from Paso Robles. While Aaron Wines focuses on bold and robust Petite Sirah and Petite Sirah blends, Aequorea is centered around delicate and nuanced Pinot Noir and white varietals from cool coastal sites on the San Luis Obispo coast.
